at home in selma

I came across a wildly amazing home renovation on Yatzer this morning: an abandoned men's club in Selma, Alabama that has been renovated to a now inhabitable but still oh-so-very antiqued state. The peeling paint walls and wide-plank floorboards are reminiscent of those fabulous homes that are so ubiquitous in Italy and France. However, this home has done it, bringing together lush tradition, vintage Americana and the grit of history - some of my favorite elements of Southern design. Really an amazing design feat.

As I'm sure many of you have heard (or experienced first hand!), New York City has been quieted by quite the post-Christmas blizzard, making the week between Christmas and New Years seem even less suited to doing anything productive. The fact that my birthday falls smack in the middle of this snowy, quiet time either. Last night, for said birthday, Andrew and I ate dinner at Freeman's, which I have to say was one of the most well done Americana lodge-themed restaurants I have been to yet. And the warm chocolate brownie with single candle was the perfect way to bring in my 27th year!

In other news, I noticed some new photos on my dear friend Natalie's Picasa site this morning, and was delighted to see that they included some shots of her lovely home on Cape Cod, which she shares with her sister & her sister's boyfriend. Natalie creates beautiful paintings (which can be seen on the walls in some of the shots below), and her eye for photography is just as artful. Her …

Wow, almost ten days without posting! Must be that time of the year. And by that time I mean the time when the end of graduate school happens to coincide with one of the busiest times at work to date as well as the fast-approaching holiday season! In other words - busy. BUT! Good news! I turned in my LAST graduate school assignment on Monday + tomorrow begins a four-day holiday break, followed by my birthday + another 3 day weekend for New Years! Yay! AND we just bought our tickets for a 2 week vacation in Cape Town! What a wonderful thing to look forward to. Of course now I have spent a good bit of the work day making a steadily growing list of new places to visit in Cape Town + its surrounds. Needless to say, I'm excited! Keep an eye out for images & write-ups of placed I am excited to visit. Followed by posts about those places come March.

It's finals time for me - the end of graduate school at last and the reason for my lessened presence in the blogosphere recently. But! Since it's snowing outside and dipping into unquestionably wintry temperatures tonight, I thought I could take a break to post some lovey winter inspiration.

See you in a week!

By this awesome blog by a twenty-something year old NYC woman doing her bit to improve the foster care system here in the city. As many know, there are serious issues with this system - kids bounce from home to home for years, hardly receiving the love and care they deserve or finding a family they can call home. So beautiful to see a young woman trying to change that.

I will be the first one to admit it - the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show was one hour of pure fun.
